Speaker Hullinghorst office embroiled in scandal; top staffer leaves Capitol
GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. – Colorado Speaker of the House Dickey Lee Hullinghorst, D-Boulder, is in hot water after her “special adviser,” Jenise May, was caught violating House rules.
According to The Durango Herald, May, a former state representative who lost her seat to Republican JoAnn Windholz in November, served on House staff while simultaneously running for a state Senate seat -- a flagrant violation of House rules.
Once confronted by Herald reporter Peter Marcus, May immediately left the Capitol.
“Coloradans, and all Americans, are tired of politicians who think and act like they are above the rules. After such a blatant violation of House rules, it’s clear that neither Speaker Hullinghorst, nor candidate May have any respect for the taxpayers of this state,” Colorado Republican Committee Chairman Steve House said. “The resolution here is simple: Speaker Hullinghorst must require candidate May return all taxpayer funds she accepted while violating House rules.”
